Another pay TV forecast adjustment, another win for OTT

Digital TV Research has revised its Asia Pacific pay TV forecast, in the process lauding IPTV as the big winner, while playing down the proliferation of OTT video as a result of pay TV’s demise, particularly in the continent’s heartland of China. It gives us a good opportunity to run the numbers in parallel with those from our research arm Rethink TV. Our numbers have Asia Pacific at 340 million SVoD subscribers by 2023, of which a majority 245 million are projected to come from China – growth which will be dominated by freemium services. In comparison, Digital TV Research’s latest figures show IPTV.

MGM, which holds the largest film and TV library in Hollywood, is finally in play – and likely to be acquired by tech major and video streaming behemoth Amazon. With a rumoured price tag of $9 billion, the deal, while substantial, is merely equivalent to 8.3% of Amazon’s Q1 2021 earnings of $108.5 billion. Indeed, the 44% year-on-year (YoY) increase for its Q1 results alone would pay for the deal more than four times over. This is the kind of deal that helps to explain why AT&T was so keen cut its losses and incur a $66 billion loss on its Warner Media assets by merging the former Time Warner media major with Discovery for $43 billion in cash and receiving 71% in equity in the new combined entity in return. It also follows on from Amazon’s 15.4x increase in what it is willing to pay to secure exclusive NFL Thursday Night Football coverage for its US Amazon Prime customers.

Apple's AR & VR headset may not need external input for orientation & motion detection

Apple is continuing to investigate headsets like its "AR Glasses," as part of its exploration of Augmented and Virtual Reality systems. One such headset in future may utilize sensors that can detect angular rotation, such as that experienced when the device is placed on a user's head or removed. "[It] may be beneficial for the VR headset to be able to detect when a head-worn device (e.g., headset, eyeglasses, headphones, etc.) is being removed from the user's head, is being placed on the user's head, or both," says Apple in US Patent No. 10,557,724, "Angle detection of a rotating system using a single magnet and multiple hall sensors."
