LINEAR TV CHANNEL OFFERING TO REDUCE IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS, SAYS HULU CEO

December 06, 2018 / Anabelia Horbuz

Randy Freer, CEO of the streaming platform Hulu, said that the traditional pay TV offering that includes more than 300 linear channels is going to shrink dramatically over the next 10 years. The executive participated this week in the BI Ignition conference in New York. According to Freer, only cable networks “that have been able to build a brand” and that resonate with consumers will survive, Variey reported.Hulu currently has a linear TV service with more than 50 channels. However, the executive said that, with the exception of news and live sports, everything else in the TV package will be distributed on demand. Currently, the company is evaluating the rollout of skinnier bundles that strip out linear feeds of entertainment channels to cut prices. On the other hand, Freer said that sports content “has a tendency to drive subscriptions” and acknowledged that they will evaluate adding sports when the time comes.
