AT&T’s planned DirecTV streaming service may run on third-party hardware

AT&T’s new DirecTV streaming service, due out later this year, is being packaged with a proprietary Android TV-based streaming device. But, the service might also be available through apps on third-party devices.David Christopher, president of AT&T Mobility and Entertainment, said that AT&T is still excited about the hardware piece of the new DirecTV service but that it doesn’t necessarily mean the company won’t have an application that can run on someone else’s hardware in a second or third bedroom.“We’ll play with that and think about that as we get to market,” Christopher said today at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Telecom and Media Conference.
