Three great opportunities for startups in the entertainment space

With over-the-top (OTT) changing the way we consume entertainment across devices, most of the media attention is going to the big players trying to elbow their way into the streaming space with big new subscription services and original programming. Less discussed is the suite of technologies that pave the way for those services to connect to their audience and monetize the content.Okay, it’s true video compression, identity management, analytics, front-end personalization and device-specific experience optimization are not the sexiest topics in the media world.

This time Amazon really does have Bond in its sights

Article | August 2, 2022

MGM, which holds the largest film and TV library in Hollywood, is finally in play – and likely to be acquired by tech major and video streaming behemoth Amazon. With a rumoured price tag of $9 billion, the deal, while substantial, is merely equivalent to 8.3% of Amazon’s Q1 2021 earnings of $108.5 billion. Indeed, the 44% year-on-year (YoY) increase for its Q1 results alone would pay for the deal more than four times over. When it comes to investment capital to deploy, the tech majors led by Amazon and Apple are in a financial class of their own. This is the kind of deal that helps to explain why AT&T was so keen cut its losses and incur a $66 billion loss on its Warner Media assets by merging the former Time Warner media major with Discovery for $43 billion in cash and receiving 71% in equity in the new combined entity in return. It also follows on from Amazon’s 15.4x increase in what it is willing to pay to secure exclusive NFL Thursday Night Football coverage for its US Amazon Prime customers.

4 Stocks To Buy To Invest in Virtual Reality

Article | February 14, 2022

The virtual reality market has been hailed as the "next big thing" for decades, but VR has repeatedly disappointed consumers with mediocre hardware products and software experiences. But in recent years, a wave of refined devices narrowed the gap between consumer expectations and reality. The VR market's future has yet to be written, but investors who believe in this budding market should consider buying these four tech stocks. Sony's PlayStation VR is the best-selling VR headset in the world with over 5 million shipments since its launch in October 2016. That only represents a sliver of Sony's installed base of 110 million PS4s, but that foothold has encouraged developers to produce more stand-alone VR games and add-on experiences for PS4 games.

Why Shares of AMC Entertainment Are Surging Today

Article | April 28, 2020

It was just two weeks ago that it looked as if the COVID-19 pandemic would push AMC into bankruptcy, as forced theater closures shut off revenue to the world's biggest cinema operator. The company also slashed its dividend, and executives all took pay cuts to help conserve cash. Investors should still be wary, even if AMC is able to open many of its theaters sooner than the mid-June date it had been eyeing.

MayaMD & LG Electronics Offer New AI Healthcare at Home Program Via Smart TV

MayaMD | February 14, 2022

MayaMD, one of LG NOVA's Proto Challenge first winners, will offer its AI health assistant via LG Smart TVs, creating an exciting new opportunity in the fast-growing home healthcare market. This partnership between MayaMD and LG Electronics kicked off last month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, and is open to interested healthcare providers. Multiple studies have shown that home healthcare solutions offer patients and providers more convenient and less costly care options. These findings have become all the more relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced many patients to delay necessary care. This new offering from MayaMD and LG Electronics allows patients and providers the ability to collaborate at a distance without missing a beat. Initial pilots will integrate MayaMD's state of the art conversational AI health assistant with LG Smart TVs in order to provide care to patients with heart disease. The objective of these pilots will be to measure the impact of this technology on patient engagement and health outcomes. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the US, accounting for 650,000 deaths annually. Since adults with heart disease tend to be more sedentary, and over 70% of adults spend 3+ hours per day using a smart TV, it makes sense that patient engagement would increase via this new delivery channel. "There is so much room for growth here, and we welcome healthcare providers that want to take part in this exciting journey. First come, first serve!", says Dr. Vipindas Chengat, cofounder of MayaMD. A recent study in a peer-reviewed medical journal with researchers and medical faculty from the University of Michigan, UCLA, and University of Utah found that MayaMD's AI health assistant performed at par or better than individual clinicians when providing triage advice, illustrating just how powerful AI can be. We are grateful for the support from LG and encourage providers to reach out to us if interested in participating. This is a phenomenal opportunity," Christian Habermann, cofounder & CMO. About MayaMD MayaMD creates digital tools powered by AI to deliver relevant health and medical information for patients, insurers and providers.
