Automatic generation of audio descriptions for sports programs

Audio descriptions, which provide explanations of screen contents by human voice via audio subchannels, are important services for people with visual impairments to enjoy TV programs. However, owing to the large amount of manpower required to produce audio descriptions, it has been difficult to offer this service with many TV programs. To address this problem, NHK STRL has been conducting R&D on a system for computer-generated audio descriptions (“automated audio description”) for live sports programs based on real-time data about the games.
