MEDIA 7: Please tell us about your professional journey and your role at Mzaalo.
VIKRAM TANNA:
I have had the opportunity to embark on my professional journey with a digital startup and have worked across global media & entertainment platforms like Viacom, Star and Discovery. I strongly believe that technology is increasingly becoming the centre of every human interaction. My role at Mzaalo gives me an opportunity to translate my consumer-centric experience and harness the power of technology to build the first of its kind of Social Entertainment Commerce platform. Our blockchain-based global entertainment ecosystem democratizes content access and rewards users for their time and attention.


M7: How do you see the technology penetration in the entertainment domain, and how is going to be useful for the end-user?
VT:
The last few years have seen a major shift across domains, the entertainment sector is no different. Technology penetration is driving mass adoption of digital content consumption and has redefined the consumer experience objectives for the entertainment domain. Emerging tech stacks have triggered new content formats leading to affordable pricing for the consumer. For the end-user, there has never been a better time to access entertainment anytime and anywhere.


M7: You have been a great facilitator of user and brand experience in the entertainment industry. According to you what are the key components to deliver this user and brand experience?
VT:
User – Brand experiences drive the entertainment economy. I strongly believe that Entertainment tech stacks need to focus on the 3C’s – Content, Consumers and Commerce with the consumer at the center stage of innovation. AI-based Personalization of user experience is the most crucial. Brands need to shift from linear ad communication to user engagement. Content creation, curation and consumption patterns should enhance brand experience and user interactivity. Tech stacks should enable ecosystems to talk to each other, hence creating experiences for commerce.

M7: You have been associated with the entertainment industry for 20 years now. How do you see the technology transition in the entertainment industry?
VT:
The single constant factor since I started my career with a digital startup and today is that Mass user adoption of technology continues to cascade the pace of tech innovation. The current pandemic has changed behavioral and consumption patterns, humans are now adapting technology at the speed of light. I believe that apart from bringing in efficiencies in processes, data driven decisions and personalization, the following 3 key factors have broken historical barriers to transform the Entertainment industry :

Affordable Pricing leading to Mass Digitization - The cost of technology and data continues to drop, and the devices used to digest media are getting more advanced and convenient.

Digital first approach to Content creation - Ecosystem of new age digital content creators are now delivering same high-quality content as the existing media giants. Video technology is rapidly advancing along with actionable data-based technology stacks which has led to increasing demands for video-based delivery. The barriers for new media companies are now very low with plenty of distribution vehicles available.

Freelance Mania driving Talent access - With the emergence of marketplaces like Upwork.com and Freelancer, startups using freelance talent strategically can compete with a full bench of talent in established entertainments studios. This framework ensures project-based talent excellence at lower effective cost and boosts margins.

M7: The revenue model for advertisers has changed with the digital platforms. What are your thoughts on this?
VT:
The new definition for TV is Total Video - ad revenues are now planned across television and digital video platforms. The lines are getting blurred with media giants distributing their content on digital platforms and premiering flagship shows to compete with the new age digital entertainment platforms. Advertisers follow consumers, and with the digital video mass adoption we are witnessing a significant digital revenue growth. Digital platforms bring in clarity to achieve ROI and an ability to constantly optimize campaigns. Going forward, there will be a major consumer shift with rise of Connected TV (CTV). This also means significant revenue growth for the entertainment ecosystem.

Sphere studios and stmicroelectronics reveal new details on the world's largest cinema image sensor

Sphere Entertainment Co. revealed new details on its work with STMicroelectronics a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, to create the world's largest image sensor for Sphere's Big Sky camera system. Big Sky is the groundbreaking, ultra-high-resolution camera system being used to capture content for Sphere, the next-generation entertainment medium in Las Vegas. Inside the venue, Sphere features the world's largest, high-resolution LED screen which wraps up, over, and around the audience to create a fully immersive visual environment. To capture content for this 160,000 sq. ft., 16K x 16K display, the Big Sky camera system was designed by the team at Sphere Studios – the in-house content studio developing original live entertainment experiences for Sphere. Working with Sphere Studios, ST manufactured a first-of-its-kind, 18K sensor capable of capturing images at the scale and fidelity necessary for Sphere's display. Big Sky's sensor – now the world's largest cinema camera sensor in commercial use – works with the world's sharpest cinematic lenses to capture detailed, large-format images in a way never before possible. "Big Sky significantly advances cinematic camera technology, with each element representing a leap in design and manufacturing innovation," said Deanan DaSilva, lead architect of Big Sky at Sphere Studios. Big Sky's 316-megapixel sensor is almost 7x larger and 40x higher resolution than the full-frame sensors found in high-end commercial cameras. The die, which measures 9.92cm x 8.31cm (82.4 cm2), is twice as large as a wallet-sized photograph, and only four full die fit on a 300mm wafer. The system is also capable of capturing images at 120 fps and transferring data at 60 gigabytes per second. Big Sky also allows filmmakers to capture large-format images from a single camera without having to stitch content together from multiple cameras – avoiding issues common to stitching including near distance limitations and seams between images. Sphere Entertainment Co. revealed new details on its work with STMicroelectronics a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, to create the world's largest image sensor for Sphere's Big Sky camera system. Big Sky is the groundbreaking, ultra-high-resolution camera system being used to capture content for Sphere, the next-generation entertainment medium in Las Vegas. Inside the venue, Sphere features the world's largest, high-resolution LED screen which wraps up, over, and around the audience to create a fully immersive visual environment. To capture content for this 160,000 sq. ft., 16K x 16K display, the Big Sky camera system was designed by the team at Sphere Studios – the in-house content studio developing original live entertainment experiences for Sphere. Working with Sphere Studios, ST manufactured a first-of-its-kind, 18K sensor capable of capturing images at the scale and fidelity necessary for Sphere's display. Big Sky's sensor – now the world's largest cinema camera sensor in commercial use – works with the world's sharpest cinematic lenses to capture detailed, large-format images in a way never before possible. The die, which measures 9.92cm x 8.31cm (82.4 cm2), is twice as large as a wallet-sized photograph, and only four full die fit on a 300mm wafer. The system is also capable of capturing images at 120 fps and transferring data at 60 gigabytes per second. Big Sky also allows filmmakers to capture large-format images from a single camera without having to stitch content together from multiple cameras – avoiding issues common to stitching including near distance limitations and seams between images.
