Americans Spent $15.9 Billion on Subscription Streaming Services in 2019

According to a report from DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, consumers spent $25.2 billion on home entertainment in 2019. That’s up 8.4% from 2018. It’s estimated that $15.9 billion of that was spent on subscription streaming, making up 63% of the total. Digital movie sales made up around $2.6 billion of the total, up 5.1% and digital movie rentals were up 9% from 2018. DEG says “consumers’ continued engagement with VOD, increasingly through internet services,” led to those increased numbers. Purchasing content in both digital and physical forms, including Blu-Ray, DVDs, 4K UHD, and digital totaled $5.9 billion, with physical disc sales down 18.2% from 2018.
