Redbox Entertainment Collaborates with Charles Murray and Marc Danon's Command Films on a Feature Film Slate

Redbox Entertainment, the firm’s original entertainment division, is collaborating on a multi-picture slate of programming with Command Films, a new production company established by writer and executive producer Charles Murray and veteran film executive Marc Danon. Redbox will distribute six films over the next three years that fulfill Command’s mandate to produce content that elevates Black voices and experiences across commercial genres through the collaboration.

“Redbox serves diverse and dynamic communities throughout America, and our commitment to reducing systemic inequalities through representation provides the perfect platform for elevating underrepresented voices and the art they create,” said Redbox CEO Galen Smith. “When Marc presented the concept he and Charles developed for Command; I realized the collaboration would offer a chance to create films that amuse and inspire viewers while also providing them with opportunities to interact through stories that move them.”

Murray has worked as a writer, producer, and director for almost two decades. The multihyphenate has written, and executive produced major television series for Lucasfilm and Marvel, including Sons of Anarchy, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Luke Cage. Murray most recently worked as showrunner for the Netflix limited series True Story, starring Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes, and created Blood Brothers, an eight-episode limited series with A&E Studios that chronicled Muhammed Ali and Malcolm X’s fated friendship. Danon, who also works as Redbox Entertainment’s Head of Original Content, is a programming veteran who has acquired critical and financial successes such as John Wick, Dear White People, and Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain.

“Independent filmmaking has always been my North Star,” Murray adds. “At the heart of our collaboration is a shared enthusiasm and deep respect for Black creatives, as well as a commitment to guarantee that their exceptional talent is recognized across the industry.”

Danon said, “Galen has made it obvious that Redbox is dedicated to promoting content that delivers diverse perspectives to the world.” “His call to action perfectly matched with what Charles and I have been creating over the last few years - stories that entertain, educate, and inspire one film at a time.”

The strategic collaboration is the next step in Redbox’s growth into original content and distribution in theaters, on-demand, and via Redbox kiosks. Redbox Entertainment has released over 21 films since its start in 2019, including Capone (Tom Hardy), Shadow in the Cloud (Chlo Grace Moretz and Nick Robinson), SAS: Red Notice (Sam Heughan and Ruby Rose), and American Traitor: The True Story of Axis Sally (Al Pacino and Meadow Williams). Last year, Redbox announced a collaboration with Basil Iwanyk to establish Asbury Park Pictures, distributing a slate of twelve action films. Black Site, the venture’s first production, recently completed production.

Redbox has evolved into a multi-product entertainment provider, offering both physical and digital options to consumers during the last two years. Redbox currently offers a variety of windows and business models, including film distribution, transactional video on demand (TVOD), premium video on demand (PVOD), ad-supported linear, and on-demand video (AVOD).
