In a world of ever-advancing technology, few innovations today are considered true global disruptors. Enter: the Metaverse. On the cusp of dramatically altering digital communications and experiences as we know them, the Metaverse is poised to evolve our digitally driven modern lives from video, photo, and text-based interactions to highly immersive and connected virtual experiences. Should consumers be excited about this? Nervous? Cautiously optimistic? At this stage, the very early days of the Metaverse give us little to rely on in terms of conceptualizing its impact on our day-to-day lives in the distant future. And yet, conversation and anticipation surrounding the Metaverse continues to dominate everything from news headlines to shareholder calls.

Launched in 2018, NVIDIA’s® Turing™ GPU Architecture ushered in the future of 3D graphics and GPU-accelerated computing. Turing provided major advances in efficiency and performance for PC gaming, professional graphics applications, and deep learning inferencing. Using new hardware-based accelerators, Turing fused rasterization, real-time ray tracing, AI, and simulation to enable incredible realism in PC games, and cinematic-quality interactive experiences. Two years later in 2020, the NVIDIA® Ampere architecture incorporated more powerful RT Cores and Tensor Cores, along with a novel SM structure that offered 2x FP32 performance, clock-for-clock, compared to Turing GPUs. These innovations allowed the Ampere architecture to run up to 1.7x faster than Turing in traditional raster graphics, and up to 2x faster in ray tracing.

As part of the ongoing transition to Internet Protocol (IP) networks for media workflows, the media and entertainment industry has developed new IP standards for transporting broadcast signals. This white paper offers guidance to help broadcasters and media organizations transition to IP, and demystifies common misconceptions when using the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) 2110 standards and associated IP infrastructure. It provides details explaining why organizations transition from traditional Serial Digital Interface (SDI) to IP workflows using SMPTE 2110 standards and covers important topics related to workflow design, synchronization, and clocking, including relevant standards to support uncompressed contribution.
