About 18 months ago, I was talking with a longtime streaming industry veteran about our shared frustration with the various set-top boxes and devices on the market, or more accurately, the platforms behind them. Because the companies behind those platforms also have a stake in the content licensing game, you can’t get all platforms on all devices. Most notably, you can only get iTunes on Apple devices, and you can only get Amazon Video on, well, virtually every device except Apple TV.

The crowd still matters for live sports broadcasting

Article | June 17, 2021

At opposite sides of the globe, two top-flight international football events have kicked off over the last week. In semi-vaccinated Europe the month-long Euro 2020 tournament began on Friday June 11th, with 11 countries hosting the competition across Europe. On Sunday June 13th in Brazil (a country which had now lost nearly half a million lives to COVID-19) the 2021 Copa America kicked off, with the final taking place on July 10th2021. While Euro 2020 is taking place in front of reduced capacity crowds of fans in stadiums, the Copa America is being played behind closed doors with entire participating national delegations required to be vaccinated, and delegations limited to 65 members. Euro 2020’s official motto ‘Live it. For Real’ can be taken as a declaration of intent to host a top-flight mass sporting event as close to pre-pandemic conditions as feasibly possible. The criteria for live spectator participation for UEFA (the event organisers) was key to this. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin confirmed the importance of live spectators at matches in an interview back in March where he stated "We have several scenarios, but the one guarantee we can make is that the option of playing any Euro 2020 match in an empty stadium is off the table. Every host must guarantee there will be fans at their games."

Apple's AR & VR headset may not need external input for orientation & motion detection

Article | February 11, 2020

Apple is continuing to investigate headsets like its "AR Glasses," as part of its exploration of Augmented and Virtual Reality systems. One such headset in future may utilize sensors that can detect angular rotation, such as that experienced when the device is placed on a user's head or removed. "[It] may be beneficial for the VR headset to be able to detect when a head-worn device (e.g., headset, eyeglasses, headphones, etc.) is being removed from the user's head, is being placed on the user's head, or both," says Apple in US Patent No. 10,557,724, "Angle detection of a rotating system using a single magnet and multiple hall sensors."

The rise of the introverted salesperson

Article | May 25, 2021

The shift to virtual selling has upended the status quo for many sales teams across the country and around the world. I firmly believe, as I’ve said before, thatnearly everything can be sold over video— and in many ways the virtual sales process makes it easier for sales reps to connect with customers and build trust.Still, there has been a great deal of resistance, and some organizations have just tried to wait it out, hoping that once COVID passed, they could go back to normal.

IDC:AR/VR market will still see eventual growth in 2020

Article | March 23, 2020

AR/VR market will see a 10.5% decline in the first quarter of 2020, followed by a 24.1% decline in the second due to supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, according to IDC.However, IDC’s ‘Worldwide Quarterly Augmented and Virtual Reality Headset Tracker’ states that assuming production ramps back up by midyear, a rebound in the second half of 2020 will result in total shipments of nearly 7.1 million units for the year, up 23.6% from 2019. Long-term growth will be strong throughout the forecast period with shipments growing to 76.7 million units in 2024, resulting in a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 81.5%.
